課程概述

Teaching Methods and Materials in English is a foundational course for those who are interested in English language teaching. It is a prerequisite course for Practicum in English and Internship in English, which together will help you prepare for your future language teaching career.

The first half of the semester covers a review of methods and how to approach the idea of methods in more contextually-responsive ways. We will also be looking into the teaching of listening, speaking, reading, and writing – as well as vocabulary and grammar – with questions of context in mind. The second half of the semester is more “hands-on” in nature: we will examine some basic principles that are useful for designing a course, planning a lesson, and selecting / adapting / creating teaching materials. Throughout the semester we will discuss important debates in the field, and continuously reflect on the current landscape of English language teaching in Taiwan.

By the end of this course you will:
* Be familiar with the key developments and debates in the field.
* Know the basics of designing a course, planning a lesson, and selecting / adapting / creating relevant language teaching materials.
* Develop a preliminary set of language teaching principles that respond to various contextual and student needs.
* Start engaging in dialogues that deal with the tensions between theory and practice.

Attendance and participation 
20% 
Attendance is mandatory. Please also arrive to class on time. If you will not be able to attend a class please e-mail the instructor in advance. Too many absences will hurt your grade. 
2. 
Weekly assignments 
40% 
This course requires plenty of reading. Before the start of each class, you are expected to 1) go through the corresponding weekly materials, and 2) prepare responses to a set of questions related to the materials. In some weeks, there will be additional exercises to do after class. These are exercises for you to apply what you’ve learned into practice. 
3. 
[Midterm assignment] Interview presentation 
20% 
In pairs, interview one of your secondary school English teachers. The interview will be an opportunity for you to explore how teachers deal with the relationship between theory and practice. The depth of your interview, analysis, and reflection will determine the grade you get. You are advised to make connections with what you have learned in class.  
4. 
[Final assignment] Micro-teaching 
20% 
The 12-minute teaching demonstration will be an opportunity to showcase your teaching skills that you’ve built up this semester. You will be given approximately one month in advance to prepare for this. On the day of the demonstration, please also submit the lesson plan that your teaching is based on and any teaching material you use. Your teaching will be peer-reviewed.
